Fowler Staff Positions
Director of Development
The Director of Development will be responsible for creating and activating short- and long-term plans and robust strategies for individual, corporate and foundation fundraising, with particular emphasis on the expansion of the individual major gift effort aimed at achieving those objectives. The DOD will also reinvigorate a focused effort on Museum membership and all donor engagement strategies that include exhibition openings, stewardship, and events to recognize the generosity of patrons and members. They will also identify, qualify, cultivate, and solicit prospective donors who have the capacity to make financial commitments of $25,000+ and deliver timely and effective follow-up to prospects and donors.
Working with the Museum Director and senior staff, the DOD will help to establish and manage a volunteer board as a means for achieving important fundraising goals. In addition, the DOD will oversee the management of volunteer special interest councils and arrange opportunities for the Museum Director and other staff as appropriate to meet with donors and volunteers in forums designed to engender increased interest in and support of the Museum.

Deputy Director
The Deputy Director (DD) of the UCLA Fowler Museum is responsible for development, implementation and management of all financial, administration, and operational functions for the museum and for coordinating the activities of the museums leadership teams to implement cross- departmental strategic initiatives. The DD acts as the museum’s financial officer and works with the museum director and the director of development to set fundraising goals for operations and exhibitions. The DD develops annual and multi-year operating budgets, supports strategic planning, and leads the analysis and reporting of exhibition and grant budgets. Determines allocations of endowment and gift funds and prepares reports for key donors. In partnership with the Dean’s Office in the School of the Arts and, the DD coordinates the museum’s legal matters, including contracts, oversees the activities of the Registration, Collections and Conservation department as well as the project manager of exhibitions.

Repatriation Coordinator and Curator of Native American Cultures
Under the general direction of the Museum’s Director, and with guidance from UCLA’s Chancellor’s Designee on Repatriation the NAGPRA Repatriation Coordinator and Curator of Native American Cultures serves as the campus’s designated authority under the University of California Native American Cultural Affiliation and Repatriation Policy (“UC Policy”). Develops tribal relationships that acknowledge and respect a Tribe’s sovereignty, cultural protocols, and cultural and religious practices and knowledge. Works across campus departments to achieve the university’s goals around the timely and respectful return of Native American ancestors and cultural items. Ensures the university is compliant with all aspects of NAGPRA, CalNAGPRA and the UC Policy. In addition, the position manages and organizes the Fowler Museum’s Native American collections and associated documentation. Contributes to the development of exhibitions related to Native American cultures. Seeks grant funds to support repatriation and collaborative community projects. Supervises the Archeological Collections Manager (who supervises a repatriation team including two leads, student employees, and interns) an archivist, and others needed to meet compliance requirements.

Volunteering at the Fowler
The Fowler often has volunteer opportunities for people ages 18 and older who seek greater involvement at the Museum. From assisting with research and conservation to staffing membership tables at events, volunteers play an important role in maintaining the Museum’s tradition of excellence.

Opportunities for Students
Fowler Museum Gallery Attendant
Part-time position, Work-Study preferred, but not required
Compensation: $16.25/hr
Under the supervision of the Museum security supervisors, perform the duties of gallery attendant by ensuring the safety of all artworks while on display in the Museum’s galleries. Ensure that Museum and its occupants are adequately protected against harm or loss while on duty. Conduct a thorough visual check of each artwork to check for any discrepancies and/or damage. Report all unusual findings immediately. Maintain a running count of daily gallery visitors and current gallery occupation. Assist with various museum events (receptions, parties, lectures, performances, etc.) including set-up and strike. Escort museum guests in secured locations. Comply with and enforce all Museum policies and procedures as instructed. Other related tasks as assigned.

Scholarships and Awards
Administered under the direction of the Fowler Museum Director and in consultation with an interdisciplinary review committee she appoints, the following research and travel fellowships are offered for 2023:
AWARDS FOR UCLA UNDERGRADUATE, GRADUATE and PhD STUDENTS
ROZAIRE RESEARCH AWARD ($2,500)
Established in 2017 to honor the legacy of Dr. Charles E. Rozaire, the Rozaire Research Award focuses on his life’s work conducting archaeological fieldwork and researching museum collections across California, the US Southwest, and Mexico. The award supports costs associated with student research analyzing existing material cultural collections and/or archives with priority given to students using Fowler Museum collections and following indigenous research protocols. See Section 3 of https://www.uvic.ca/hsd/research/igovprotocol.pdf for an example of the latter. Undergraduate, graduate, and PhD students may apply.
AWARDS FOR UCLA GRADUATE and PhD STUDENTS
RALPH C. ALTMAN AWARD ($4,000)
The Ralph C. Altman Memorial Fund was established in 1967 by friends, students, and colleagues of the late Ralph C. Altman, founder and first director of what is now the Fowler Museum at UCLA. In his four years as director, Mr. Altman helped build the museum’s holdings of non-western art into one of the most distinguished collections in the world. The perpetuation of interest and scholarship in the field of non-western arts through the training of graduate students was Mr. Altman’s foremost goal. Graduate and PhD students from all fields and disciplines addressing non-western arts may apply.
ARNOLD RUBIN AWARD ($3,000)
Established in 1988 and named in honor of the late Dr. Arnold Rubin, professor of Art History at UCLA from 1967 to 1988, the Rubin Award is given annually to a graduate student working in Dr. Rubin’s areas of interest. These include African, Pacific, and Native American arts and material culture, and popular phenomena emphasizing the unconventional arts of living people, regardless of geographic area. Graduate and PhD students studying the arts of the regions described here may apply.
SARAH ELIZABETH GILFILLAN AWARD ($3,000)
The award was established in 2007 by family, friends and colleagues in memory of Sarah Gilfillan. She was associate director of development for the Fowler Museum and did curatorial work on several important Latin American projects. Fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, Ms. Gilfillan had extensive experience researching and working in art museums and galleries in Brazil, Mexico, and Spain. Her goal had been to enter a PhD program in Latin American art history. This award provides a travel stipend to assist with field research or study abroad. Only PhD students in the field of Latin American arts may apply.

ALLOWABLE EXPENSES:
Award funding may be used for expenses directly related to the applicant’s research project. These include travel and field location costs (flights/visas/ground transportation/local lodging/meals), and other research expenses (e.g. Internet/mobile phone, research materials, and local fees, etc.). These awards do not cover the purchase of equipment.
HOW TO APPLY:
Students from a wide range of departments are encouraged to apply. Please indicate on the application form the award(s) for which you are eligible. Selection is based on the merits of the applicant. Any graduate or PhD student registered at UCLA or receiving a degree from UCLA, and planning a career in a field related to the goals of these awards is eligible, with the exception of the Gilfillan Award for which only UCLA PhD candidates may apply. In all cases, preference will be given to PhD candidates whose proposed project is directly related to their dissertation and who do not have other major sources of support.
